Unburying My Father is an act of love, a work of art, and a catalyst for deep human connection.

The video that brought the Kickstarter campaign to life.

Unburying My Father is a narrative photography book about the life and photography of Randy Masser. It is an exploration of Randy’s son, Zander’s experience of loss and learning to heal through creativity.

Randy Masser was a New York-based photographer from 1975-2000. He was born with a bleeding disorder called hemophilia. In the early 1980s he contracted HIV from using contaminated blood products to treat the disorder. He died on January 6, 2000 from AIDS-related illnesses.

Zander was fourteen when Randy died. Twenty years later, Zander unburied his father's entire photography collection, totalling ten thousand slides, in the basement of his childhood home. This prompted him to dig deeper into his father's story, as well as his own experience of living through loss. Zander has turned this transformative experience into a narrative photography book. He used a successful Kickstarter campaign to raise funds to complete and self-publish the book. He hopes that his book, in addition to preserving and honoring the life and work of his father, will also serve as a tool to help others confront, process and create meaning in their grief.
